Please join us to discover the history of the African American communities of East Towson and Lutherville, with a tour of Pleasant Rest Cemetery in Towson.
Hear the stories of the families buried in the cemetery including descendants of the enslaved residents of Hampton Mansion and those who migrated to the area in the late 1800s.
Preservation Alliance of Baltimore County Board Member and historian, Carolyn Greenfield Adams, who has family members buried at the cemetery, will lead the tour.
Pleasant Rest Cemetery was purchased by the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in the early 1920s. Those interred there lived in the surrounding communities including East Towson, Lutherville and Riderwood. It contains over 200 marked sites and many more that are unmarked.
The area had been used as a burial ground much earlier. In the back of the cemetery are markers from the mid 1800s and maps from the late 1800s do show a small area labeled “colored cemetery.” It also contains several graves that were relocated from the cemetery of what is today Pleasant Hope Baptist church when road work in Northern Parkway/Belvedere area paved it over.
Proceeds will be shared with the cemetery maintenance fund.
Mt. Olive Baptist Church is located at 816 York Road in Towson. We will meet in the church parking lot, located behind the church, on Bosley Avenue, just off York Road.
